How do you collect hours today?

Time and a half is 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour, and double time is $40. To calculate overtime pay, multiply the overtime hours by your rate and by 1.5: 6 hours at $20 is 6 x $30 = $180. This time and a half calculator does it for a whole week, from the exact hours and minutes you worked.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the week: In, Out and the unpaid break for each day. The overtime panel "Overtime, breaks and pay" is already open on this page.
  2. Enter your hourly rate in "Hourly rate" and pick the currency.
  3. Check the rule. In the U.S. it starts with "U.S. federal (FLSA): over 40 hours a week". Presets for California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado are in the same list; other states can have their own rules.
  4. Read the summary: regular hours, overtime and double time in hours and minutes and in decimal, then "Regular pay", "Overtime pay", "Double time pay" and "Gross pay".

The "Overtime multiplier" (1.5) and "Double time multiplier" (2) can be changed, for example to 1.75. Pay is gross, before taxes.

Worked example: a 45 hour 20 minute week at $17.50

Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30 minute lunch, then Friday 8:00 AM to 5:50 PM with a 30 minute lunch. Federal rule, $17.50 an hour:

DayHours
Mon to Thu9:00 each, 36:00
Fri9:20
Week45:20 (45.33 decimal)
LineHoursRatePay
Regular40:00$17.50$700.00
Overtime5:20$26.25$140.00
Gross45:20$840.00

The time and a half rate is $17.50 x 1.5 = $26.25. 5 hours 20 minutes is 5 1/3 hours, and 5 1/3 x $26.25 = $140.00 exactly.

Two shortcuts give a wrong answer here. Treating 5:20 as 5.2 hours pays $136.50, $3.50 short, because 20 minutes is a third of an hour, not two tenths. Using the rounded decimal 5.33 pays $139.91, one cent short. The calculator works from the minutes and rounds the pay to the cent once, at the end.

How to calculate time and a half

  1. Find the time and a half rate: hourly rate x 1.5. Another way to get there: add half the rate to the rate. $18 + $9 = $27.
  2. Find the overtime hours: under the federal rule, the hours over 40 in the workweek. Convert minutes to hours by dividing by 60 (see hours to decimal).
  3. Multiply: overtime hours x time and a half rate = overtime pay.
  4. Add regular pay: 40 x hourly rate, plus the overtime pay, gives gross pay.

Some pay stubs show the same money split differently: every hour at the straight rate, plus a "half time" premium on the overtime hours. For the example above, 45:20 x $17.50 = $793.33 and 5:20 x $8.75 = $46.67, together $840.00. Same total, two ways to write it.

Time and a half and double time rate table

Hourly rateTime and a half (1.5x)Extra per overtime hourDouble time (2x)
$12.00$18.00$6.00$24.00
$15.00$22.50$7.50$30.00
$15.75$23.625$7.875$31.50
$16.00$24.00$8.00$32.00
$17.50$26.25$8.75$35.00
$18.00$27.00$9.00$36.00
$20.00$30.00$10.00$40.00
$22.50$33.75$11.25$45.00
$25.00$37.50$12.50$50.00
$30.00$45.00$15.00$60.00
$35.00$52.50$17.50$70.00
$40.00$60.00$20.00$80.00

Rates with odd cents give a half cent. $15.75 x 1.5 is $23.625, not $23.63. Keep the half cent in the rate and round only the pay: 3 overtime hours at $15.75 pay $70.875, which rounds to $70.88. Rounding the rate first gives $70.89.

When time and a half applies

  • U.S. federal: hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate (29 U.S.C. § 207(a)(1)). There is no daily overtime and no double time in the federal rule. Each workweek stands alone, so a 45 hour week and a 35 hour week are 5 hours of overtime, not an average of 40 (29 CFR 778.104). The biweekly timesheet calculator shows this over a two week pay period.
  • Daily overtime: California, Alaska and Nevada pay 1.5x over 8 hours in a day, Colorado over 12, each with conditions. They are the four states with daily overtime in the U.S. Department of Labor's state table. The overtime calculator explains each preset and how daily and weekly overtime combine.
  • UK and Germany: there is no statutory overtime premium. Time and a half exists only if the contract or a collective agreement says so. With the UK or Germany preset the multiplier starts at 1.0; set it to 1.5 if that is what your contract pays.

Salaried exempt employees are not covered by overtime rules, so check how your job is classified. The calculator multiplies the hourly rate you enter; it does not work out a regular rate that includes bonuses or commissions. Holiday and weekend premiums are not part of any preset; if your employer pays one, the rate is in your contract or policy.

This is a calculation, not legal advice.

Double time pay

Double time is 2 times the regular rate. Among the presets, only California has it: hours over 12 in one workday, and hours over 8 on the seventh day in a row of a workweek (Cal. Labor Code § 510(a)). One 13 hour day at $20 an hour, 6:00 AM to 7:30 PM with a 30 minute lunch:

HoursRatePay
First 8:00 regular$20.00$160.00
Next 4:00 at 1.5x$30.00$120.00
Last 1:00 at 2x$40.00$40.00
13:00$320.00

Under the federal rule the same day pays $260.00, as long as the week stays at or under 40 hours.

If your employer pays double time for something else, such as a holiday, the calculator has no preset for it. "My own overtime thresholds" lets you set a daily and a weekly threshold with one multiplier, for example 2.

FAQ

What is time and a half?

Pay at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate, usually for overtime hours. At $16 an hour it is $24 an hour.

What is time and a half for $15 an hour?

$22.50 an hour, because $15 x 1.5 = $22.50. Double time at $15 is $30 an hour.

How do I calculate time and a half with minutes?

Divide the minutes by 60 first. 2 hours 10 minutes is 2 1/6 hours, so at $15.75 an hour the overtime pay is 2 1/6 x $23.625 = $51.19. Do not type 2:10 as 2.10.

Do I get time and a half after 8 hours a day?

Not under the federal rule, which only counts hours over 40 in a workweek. In California, Alaska and Nevada daily overtime starts after 8 hours, with conditions in Alaska and Nevada, and in Colorado after 12.

Is time and a half paid on all hours or only overtime hours?

Only on the overtime hours. In a 45 hour week, 40 hours are paid at the regular rate and 5 at 1.5x.

Can overtime be averaged over a two week paycheck?

No. Under the federal rule each workweek is counted on its own. 45 hours plus 35 hours is 5 hours of overtime, even though the two weeks add up to 80.
