How do you collect hours today?

To turn a salary into an hourly rate, divide the yearly salary by the hours you are paid for in a year. At 40 hours a week that is 2,080 hours, so $52,000 a year is $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 an hour. The other way round, multiply: $25 an hour x 2,080 = $52,000 a year. This calculator does both directions and shows the same pay per hour, day, week, two weeks, month and year at once.

How to use the calculator

  1. Type the pay in the Pay field, as you see it on an offer or a paycheck: 52,000 or $ 25.50 both work.
  2. Pick the period under Per: an hour, a day, a week, every two weeks, a month or a year.
  3. Check the schedule. Hours a week starts at 40, Days a week at 5 and Weeks a year at 52. Change them for a part time job or a 4 day week.
  4. Read the table. The big number is the hourly rate, or the yearly pay when you typed an hourly rate. Below it are hourly, daily, weekly, every two weeks, monthly and yearly pay, the paid hours a year and the average hours a month.
  5. Optional: Paid days off. Enter holidays and vacation days to see the hours actually worked and the pay per hour actually worked. The pay itself does not change.

All amounts are gross pay, before taxes and deductions.

Worked example: a $52,000 offer

40 hours a week, 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year:

PeriodPayHow
Hourly$25.0052,000 ÷ 2,080
Daily$200.0052,000 ÷ 260 days
Weekly$1,000.0052,000 ÷ 52
Every two weeks$2,000.0052,000 ÷ 26
Monthly$4,333.3352,000 ÷ 12
Yearly$52,000.00

Now add 21 paid days off (for example 11 holidays and 10 vacation days). The salary stays $52,000, but the hours actually worked drop to 2,080 minus 21 x 8 = 1,912. Per hour actually worked, the job pays 52,000 ÷ 1,912 = $27.20. That number is useful when you compare a salaried job with paid time off against an hourly job without it.

How the calculation works

Every period goes through the yearly amount first:

  • Yearly pay = hourly rate x hours a week x weeks a year
  • Hourly rate = yearly pay ÷ (hours a week x weeks a year)
  • Monthly pay = yearly pay ÷ 12
  • Every two weeks = yearly pay ÷ (weeks a year ÷ 2)
  • Daily pay = yearly pay ÷ (days a week x weeks a year)

Amounts are rounded to the cent once, at the end, never in between. That matters with odd amounts: rounding the hourly rate first and multiplying it back up can be off by a few dollars a year.

Why divide by 12 for a month and not by 4? A month is longer than 4 weeks. 52 weeks ÷ 12 months = 4.33 weeks a month, so a 40 hour week is 173.33 hours a month on average. Multiplying a weekly pay by 4 understates the month by about 8 percent.

$40$1,600$6,933.33$83,200
$50$2,000$8,666.67$104,000

A quick check you can do in your head: at 40 hours a week, the yearly salary is about 2,000 times the hourly rate, so $20 an hour is roughly $40,000 (exactly $41,600).

Part time, 4 day weeks and other schedules

Change Hours a week and the whole table follows. $20 an hour at 25 hours a week is $20 x 25 x 52 = $26,000 a year, $2,166.67 a month. A salary of $39,000 for a 37.5 hour week works out to $39,000 ÷ 1,950 = $20.00 an hour, not the $18.75 you would get by dividing by 2,080.

Days a week only changes the daily pay: four 10 hour days and five 8 hour days are both 40 hours a week and give the same hourly rate, but a day is worth $250 instead of $200 on a $52,000 salary.

Weeks a year stays at 52 for almost everyone, because paid vacation is still paid. Lower it only for seasonal or school year jobs that are paid for fewer weeks, for example 40 weeks.

The number of hours behind a year is explained in how many work hours are in a year, and what counts as full time or part time in full time vs part time hours.

Hourly pay with overtime

This converter assumes the same hours every week and no overtime. If your hours vary, add up the real weeks on the time card calculator and enter your hourly rate there to see regular pay and overtime pay. For time and a half and double time, use the time and a half calculator, and for pay periods of two weeks the biweekly timesheet calculator.

If you keep hours and pay for a few people, the team plan stores each person's time cards and gives you a payroll CSV for everyone.

FAQ

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the paid hours in a year: hours a week x 52. At 40 hours a week that is 2,080 hours, so $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.

How much is $25 an hour a year?

$52,000 a year at 40 hours a week (25 x 2,080). That is $1,000 a week, $2,000 every two weeks and $4,333.33 a month, before taxes.

How much is $50,000 a year per hour?

$24.04 an hour at 40 hours a week (50,000 ÷ 2,080). At 37.5 hours a week it is $25.64.

Should I use 2,080 hours or subtract vacation?

Use 2,080 to compare pay, because paid holidays and vacation are part of the salary. Enter your paid days off only if you want the pay per hour actually worked, which is higher.

Is this before or after taxes?

Before. Every amount is gross pay. Taxes and deductions depend on where you live and your situation, so the calculator does not estimate take home pay.

How many hours a month is 40 hours a week?

173.33 on average: 40 x 52 ÷ 12. Single months have between 160 and 184 working hours, depending on how many weekdays they have.
