How Many Work Hours Are in a Year? 2,080, and 2,088 in 2026

A full time job of 40 hours a week has 2,080 work hours a year: 40 hours x 52 weeks. That is the number payroll and HR use. The calendar is a little longer than 52 weeks, though, and 2026 has 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at 8 hours a day. Take out the 11 federal holidays and someone who gets them all off works 2,000 hours in 2026.

Which of the three numbers you need depends on the question: converting a salary, planning a budget, or counting the hours someone actually worked. All three are worked out below, with tables you can check.

Work hours in a year by hours per week

The standard method multiplies weekly hours by 52. It ignores holidays and vacation on purpose, so it gives the paid hours of a full year, not the hours spent at work.

Hours per weekHours per year (x 52)Hours per month (÷ 12)
201,04086.67
251,300108.33
301,560130.00
321,664138.67

402,080173.33
452,340195.00
502,600216.67

The monthly column is an average. Real months have 20 to 23 weekdays, so the hours in a single month swing between 160 and 184 for a 40 hour week, as the 2026 table further down shows.

If your weeks are not all the same, add up real weeks instead of multiplying. The time card calculator totals a week of clock in and clock out times with breaks, and switches to a month at a time.

How many working days are in 2026?

2026 starts on a Thursday and is not a leap year. 365 days are 52 full weeks plus one extra day, and that extra day is a Thursday, so the year has 52 x 5 + 1 = 261 weekdays. 2025 and 2027 also have 261; 2028, a leap year starting on a Saturday, has 260.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management lists 11 federal holidays for 2026. All of them land on a weekday: July 4 is a Saturday, so the holiday is observed on Friday, July 3. That leaves 250 working days.

Federal holidays are paid days off for federal employees. Private employers are not required by federal law to give them, so for many people the right figure for 2026 is 2,088 minus whichever holidays their employer actually closes for.

2,080, 2,088 or 2,087: which one to use

2,080 is 52 weeks of 40 hours. Use it to turn an annual salary into an hourly rate, or the other way round, the way most payroll and job offers do. A $52,000 salary is $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 an hour.

2,088 is the real number of weekday hours in 2026 (261 x 8). Every year has 260, 261 or 262 weekdays, so a full time employee paid by the hour is paid for 2,080, 2,088 or 2,096 hours, holidays included. A salaried employee's pay is the same in all three years, which is why the hourly equivalent moves very slightly: $52,000 ÷ 2,088 = $24.90.

2,087 is the divisor in federal law for converting a federal employee's annual pay to an hourly rate. 5 U.S.C. 5504(b)(1) says to "divide the annual rate by 2,087". That matches the long run average of weekday hours: 365.25 ÷ 7 x 5 x 8 = 2,087. Outside federal pay you will rarely need it.

Hours actually worked: subtract time off

The 2,080 figure includes paid holidays, vacation and sick days. To get the hours someone actually spent working, take the days off away:

Hours worked = weekly hours x 52 - (days off x hours per day)

Example for 2026, 40 hours a week, 8 hour days, with all 11 federal holidays off and 10 vacation days:

StepHours
Weekday hours in 2026 (261 x 8)2,088
Minus 11 holidays (11 x 8)-88
Minus 10 vacation days (10 x 8)-80
Hours worked1,920

Starting from 2,080 instead of 2,088 gives 1,912. The 8 hour difference is just the extra weekday 2026 has; use 2,088 when you plan a specific year and 2,080 when you need a rule of thumb.

Overtime is the other side of the same sum. Someone who works 45 hours a week for 48 weeks puts in 2,160 hours, and 240 of them were over 40 in their week. Under the federal rule those are paid at time and a half, and the overtime calculator works that out week by week, including the four states that also count overtime by the day.

Full time and part time hours in a year

There is no single legal number of hours for full time work. The U.S. Department of Labor says plainly that the Fair Labor Standards Act does not define full time or part time employment; it is generally up to the employer.

One federal definition does exist, for health coverage. Under the Affordable Care Act's employer rules, the IRS counts someone as full time if they average at least 30 hours of service a week, or 130 hours a month. 30 hours a week is 1,560 hours a year.

So typical yearly figures look like this:

SchedulePer weekPer year
Standard full time402,080
Full time with a 37.5 hour week37.51,950
ACA full time threshold301,560
Typical part time201,040

Shifts that are not 5 x 8

Annual hours follow the weekly total, not the number of days. Four 10 hour days are 40 hours a week and 2,080 hours a year, the same as five 8 hour days. Three 12 hour shifts are 36 hours a week, 1,872 hours a year. Schedules that rotate between 36 and 48 hour weeks average 42 hours, 2,184 a year, but overtime is still counted for each workweek on its own, never on the average.

For pay periods, a year of biweekly pay usually has 26 paydays of 80 hours, which is the same 2,080. Because a year is 52 weeks plus a day or two, some years have a 27th biweekly payday. The biweekly timesheet calculator fills in one 14 day period at a time with overtime per workweek.

Counting your own hours

Annual figures are estimates. For payroll you need the hours that were actually worked, day by day: clock in, clock out, minus the unpaid break. The work hours calculator does a single shift, and a week on the time card gives the total in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, which is what most payroll systems ask for. If you have a total like 1,912 hours 45 minutes, hours to decimal converts it: 45 minutes is 0.75 hours.

If you keep hours for several employees, the team plan stores each person's time cards in one account and gives you a monthly timesheet per person and one payroll CSV.

FAQ

How many hours is a 40 hour work year?

2,080 hours: 40 hours a week x 52 weeks. In 2026, which has 261 weekdays, a 40 hour schedule covers 2,088 hours including paid holidays.

Does 2,080 work hours include holidays?

Yes. 2,080 counts every week of the year, so paid holidays, vacation and sick days are inside it. Subtract them to get the hours actually worked: 2,080 minus 11 holidays at 8 hours is 1,992.

How many working days are in 2026?

261 weekdays. Minus the 11 federal holidays, all of which fall on a weekday in 2026, that is 250 working days.

How many work hours are in a month?

173.33 on average for a 40 hour week (2,080 ÷ 12). A real month has 20 to 23 weekdays, so 160 to 184 hours before holidays.

How many hours a year is part time?

There is no federal definition of part time. A 20 hour week is 1,040 hours a year; a 29 hour week, just under the ACA full time threshold of 30, is 1,508.

How do I turn an annual salary into an hourly rate?

Divide the salary by the yearly hours, usually 2,080 for a 40 hour week. $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 an hour. For a 37.5 hour week divide by 1,950.

How many hours are in a year in total?

8,760 in a normal year (365 x 24) and 8,784 in a leap year. A 40 hour week fills 2,080 of them, just under 24 percent.
