How do you collect hours today?

Under the federal rule, hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at time and a half, 1.5 times the regular rate. A 46 hour week at $20 an hour pays 40 x $20 = $800 plus 6 x $30 = $180, so $980. Some states also count overtime by the day. This overtime calculator has presets for California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado, the four states with daily overtime in the U.S. Department of Labor's state table. Other states can still have their own rules.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the week: In, Out and the unpaid break for each day. Shifts past midnight count on the day they start.
  2. Pick the overtime rule in the "Overtime, breaks and pay" panel, open on this page. In the U.S. the default is "U.S. federal (FLSA): over 40 hours a week". The state presets, the UK, Germany, "My own overtime thresholds" and "No overtime, just add up hours" are in the same list.
  3. Enter your hourly rate. The summary shows regular hours, overtime and double time in hours and minutes and in decimal, then regular pay, overtime pay, double time pay and gross pay.
  4. Adjust if needed: the overtime multiplier (1.5) and the double time multiplier (2) can be changed. Alaska has a switch for employers with fewer than 4 employees. Nevada has a switch for a written four 10 hour days agreement and a field for the state minimum wage, which starts at $12.00.

Two or more weeks? Switch the period to 2 weeks or Month. Overtime is still counted for each workweek on its own; the biweekly timesheet calculator walks through a two week pay period.

Worked example: one week under four rules

Monday to Thursday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30 minute lunch (10 hours a day), then Friday 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM with no break (6 hours). 46 hours in total, paid $20 an hour:

RuleRegularOvertime at 1.5xGross pay
U.S. federal40:006:00$980.00
California38:008:00$1,000.00
Alaska38:008:00$1,000.00
Colorado40:006:00$980.00

Federal: only the weekly rule exists, and 46 minus 40 is 6 hours of overtime. Colorado: no day goes over 12 hours, so the weekly count of 6 hours is the one that pays more.

California and Alaska: each 10 hour day has 2 hours over 8, so Monday to Thursday give 8 hours of daily overtime. Those hours are not counted again toward 40, so the regular hours are 4 x 8 + 6 = 38, and no weekly overtime is added. Pay: 38 x $20 = $760 plus 8 x $30 = $240, $1,000.

Nevada depends on the rate. Below 1.5 times the state minimum wage, it counts like Alaska here. At or above it, only weekly overtime applies and the result is the federal one.

Double time and the seventh day in California

California has two kinds of overtime pay. One 14 hour day, 6:00 AM to 8:30 PM with a 30 minute lunch, at $20 an hour:

HoursRatePay
First 8:00 regular$20.00$160.00
Next 4:00 at 1.5x$30.00$120.00
Last 2:00 at 2x$40.00$80.00
14:00$360.00

The same day pays $280.00 under the federal rule (no daily overtime, if the week stays at or under 40 hours) and $300.00 under the Colorado preset (12 regular hours plus 2 at 1.5x).

If someone works all seven days of a California workweek, 8 hours each, days 1 to 5 are regular (40 hours), day 6 is weekly overtime, and on day 7 the first 8 hours are paid at 1.5x and anything beyond 8 at 2x. At $20 that is 40 x $20 + 16 x $30 = $1,280.00.

The rules behind each preset

  • U.S. federal: hours over 40 in a workweek at 1.5 times the regular rate (29 U.S.C. § 207(a)(1)). There is no daily overtime. Each workweek stands alone and weeks are never averaged (29 CFR 778.104).
  • California: over 8 hours in a day or 40 in a week at 1.5x, over 12 hours in a day at 2x. On the seventh day in a row in a workweek, the first 8 hours at 1.5x and the rest at 2x (Cal. Labor Code § 510(a)). Hours already paid as daily overtime don't count again toward 40.
  • Alaska: over 8 hours in a day or 40 in a week at 1.5x (Alaska Department of Labor, minimum wage and overtime). Employers with fewer than 4 employees don't have to pay overtime (AS 23.10.060).
  • Nevada: if the hourly rate is below 1.5 times the minimum wage, daily overtime over 8 hours applies; weekly overtime over 40 hours applies either way. A written agreement for four 10 hour days removes the daily overtime (NRS 608.018). Nevada counts a workday as 24 hours from the start of the shift; the calculator uses the shift's start date. The calculator starts with $12.00 an hour, Nevada's minimum wage in the U.S. Department of Labor state table updated July 1, 2026. If the rate has changed since, type the new one into the field. If you leave the hourly rate empty, the preset counts daily overtime.
  • Colorado: 1.5x for hours over 40 in a workweek, over 12 in a workday, or over 12 in a row, even across midnight, with a meal break allowed to be subtracted. Whichever calculation pays more applies (COMPS Order #40, 7 CCR 1103-1, Rule 4.1, in effect since February 1, 2026). Example: 6:00 PM to 8:00 AM with a 30 minute meal is 13:30 in a row, so 1:30 is overtime. The calculator counts a shift on the date it starts.

Salaried exempt employees are not covered by these overtime rules, so check how your job is classified. The calculator multiplies the hourly rate you enter; it does not work out a regular rate that includes bonuses or commissions.

Overtime in the UK and Germany

Neither the UK nor Germany has a statutory overtime premium. Overtime is time above the hours in your contract, and any extra pay comes from the contract or a collective agreement. With the UK or Germany preset, enter your contract hours per week, and the calculator shows overtime and a plus or minus balance against them. The multiplier starts at 1.0; set the premium your contract gives, for example 1.25.

FAQ

How is overtime pay calculated?

Multiply the overtime hours by the hourly rate and by 1.5. 6 hours of overtime at $20 an hour is 6 x $30 = $180. The calculator does this from exact minutes and rounds the pay to the cent at the end.

What is time and a half for $18 an hour?

$27 an hour, because $18 x 1.5 = $27. Double time at $18 is $36 an hour.

Is there daily overtime under federal law?

No. The federal rule only counts hours over 40 in a workweek, so one 12 hour day in a 36 hour week is all regular time. California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado have daily rules. In the U.S. Department of Labor's state table they are the only states that do, along with Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

When do you get double time?

In the California preset: hours over 12 in one day, and hours over 8 on the seventh day in a row of a workweek. The federal rule has no double time. With "My own overtime thresholds" you can set a daily and a weekly threshold with one multiplier, for example 2, but not a second double time tier.

How does daily overtime work in California?

Hours over 8 in a workday are paid at 1.5x and hours over 12 at 2x, and the 40 hour weekly rule applies on top. Hours already paid as daily overtime don't count again toward 40, so four 10 hour days and a 6 hour day give 8 hours of overtime, not 14 (Cal. Labor Code § 510(a)).

Do breaks count toward overtime?

Coffee and snack breaks of 5 to 20 minutes count as hours worked under federal rules (29 CFR 785.18), so leave them in. A bona fide meal period does not count, but only if the employee is completely relieved from duty; eating at the desk while working is work time (29 CFR 785.19(a)). Enter only the off duty meal break in the Break column.

Does the calculator take taxes off overtime?

No. It shows gross pay: regular, overtime and double time hours times your rate. Taxes and deductions are not included.

What is the weekly hours limit in the UK?

The Working Time Regulations limit work to an average of 48 hours a week over 17 weeks, unless the worker agrees to opt out (reg. 4). The calculator does not check this average.
