How Many Work Hours Are in 2027? 2,088, or 2,000 After Holidays

2027 has 261 weekdays, so a full time schedule of 8 hours a day covers 2,088 work hours. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management lists 11 federal holidays for 2027, all on weekdays, which leaves 250 working days and 2,000 work hours for someone who gets every federal holiday off. There is one catch at the very end of the year: New Year's Day 2028 is a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027, and with that day off the count drops to 249 days and 1,992 hours.

Why 2027 has 261 weekdays

2027 starts on a Friday and is not a leap year. 365 days are 52 full weeks plus one day, and that extra day is the first one, a Friday. So the year has 52 x 5 + 1 = 261 weekdays and 104 weekend days. 2025 and 2026 also have 261 weekdays; 2028, a leap year starting on a Saturday, has 260; 2029 is back to 261.

2027 federal holidays

OPM's federal holiday schedule already covers 2027. Three holidays fall on a Saturday or a Sunday that year and move to a weekday: a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before, a Sunday holiday on the Monday after.

OPM's 2028 schedule lists New Year's Day 2028 as Friday, December 31. That day is in 2027, so for federal employees the calendar year 2027 contains 12 holiday weekdays: 11 holidays of 2027 and the observed one of 2028.

That is why published figures for 2027 disagree. Lists that count the 11 holidays of 2027 get 250 working days and 2,000 hours. Lists that count every observed holiday that falls inside 2027 get 249 days and 1,992 hours. Both are correct for what they count. For a fiscal year or a budget, decide once which convention you use and stick to it.

Work hours in 2027 by month

8 hours a day, Monday to Friday. The holiday column has the 11 holidays of 2027; the last column also takes out Friday, December 31.

March is the longest month of 2027 with 23 working days and no holiday. January and February are the shortest, with 19 each. Without any holidays, a month has 160 to 184 hours (20 to 23 weekdays).

2,080 is the payroll convention: 40 hours x 52 weeks. It is used to turn a salary into an hourly rate in any year. $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 an hour.

2,088 is the actual number of weekday hours in 2027. Someone paid by the hour for every weekday, holidays included, is paid for 2,088 hours: at $25.00 an hour that is $52,200, $200 more than 2,080 hours would give. A salaried employee earns the same $52,000 either way, which works out to $52,000 ÷ 2,088 = $24.90 for each weekday hour.

2,000 is 2,088 minus the 11 holidays at 8 hours each, the hours of a full time employee who gets every federal holiday off. Private employers are not required by federal law to give federal holidays, so your own number is 2,088 minus the holidays your employer actually closes for.

Other schedules in 2027

Hours per day x 261 gives the weekday hours of 2027 for any five day schedule. The 52 week figure is the payroll convention for comparison.

Schedules that are not five equal days, such as four 10 hour days or rotating 12 hour shifts, follow the weekly total instead: 40 hours a week is 2,080 hours on the 52 week basis whatever the number of days.

To get the hours actually worked, take out vacation and sick days too. 2,088 minus 11 holidays (88 hours) minus 10 vacation days (80 hours) is 1,920 hours.

2027 and biweekly pay

2027 has 53 Fridays, because it starts on one. A biweekly payroll that pays on Fridays and has a payday on January 1, 2027 reaches its 27th payday on December 31, 2027 (January 1 + 26 x 14 days).
