Your clock out time is your clock in time plus the hours you need to work plus your unpaid lunch. Clock in at 8:00 AM, work 8 hours, take a 30 minute lunch, and you can clock out at 4:30 PM. This calculator does the sum for you, past midnight too, and tells you when to leave to reach 40 hours by the end of the week.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose "Today" to work out a single day.
  2. Enter your "Clock in time", for example 8:00 AM, 0800 or 8:00 on a 24 hour clock.
  3. Enter the "Hours you need" today, for example 8:00, 7:30 or 7.5.
  4. Enter your "Unpaid lunch (min)" in minutes. Leave it at 0 if your break is paid.
  5. Read "Clock out at". If the time falls after midnight, it is marked "next day".

To finish a week instead of a day, choose "Finish the week" and enter "Worked this week", for example 32:40, and the "Weekly target", for example 40:00. The calculator shows the hours left this week and when you can clock out on your last day.

7:45 AM8:0045 min4:30 PM
9:10 AM7:3030 min5:10 PM
10:00 PM8:0030 min6:30 AM, next day

How the 9:10 AM row works: 9:10 plus 7 hours is 4:10 PM, plus 30 minutes is 4:40 PM, plus the lunch of 30 minutes is 5:10 PM. A 37.5 hour week over 5 days is 7:30 a day, which is why 7:30 is a common daily target.

When can I clock out to reach 40 hours?

On the last day of the week, the hours you need are the weekly target minus what you have already worked.

Hours
Monday to Thursday, already worked32:40
Weekly target40:00
Left for Friday7:20

Clock in on Friday at 8:00 AM with a 30 minute lunch: 8:00 AM plus 7:20 plus 0:30 is 3:50 PM.

If you stay until 5:00 PM instead, Friday has 8:30 of work and the week reaches 41:10. Under the federal rule, the 1:10 over 40 hours is overtime, paid at at least 1.5 times the regular rate (29 U.S.C. § 207(a)(1)). Some states also count daily overtime, so check your state's rules. The overtime calculator shows the week with regular and overtime pay. This is a calculation, not legal advice.

Lunch and short breaks

Only add the break you are not paid for. Under the federal rules, short rest breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes count as paid work time (29 CFR 785.18), so they do not push your clock out time back. A bona fide meal period, ordinarily 30 minutes or more, is not work time when you are completely relieved from duty (29 CFR 785.19). If you eat at your desk while working, the lunch counts as work time and you enter 0.

If your employer rounds punches

Many time clocks round punches to the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes. With rounding to the nearest quarter hour, a punch at 4:37 PM is recorded as 4:30 PM and a punch at 4:38 PM as 4:45 PM. The federal rules accept rounding only when, over time, it does not end up taking hours away from employees (29 CFR 785.48(b)). The calculator gives the exact minute. The guide to time clock rounding rules shows how rounding can change a week.

After you clock out

To check a whole week of clock in and clock out times, with lunch and overtime, use the time card calculator. For a single shift, "how many hours did I work today" is answered by the work hours calculator. To turn 7:20 into decimal hours for a timesheet, use hours to decimal: 7:20 is 7.33 hours.
